Supramax

52,454t dwt (Approx. 49,000 tonnes cargo)

As part of the general evolution the Supramax superseded the Handymax in Jan 2006.

This size of vessel also carries the standard bulk commodities; they also carry many more parcels, some containers, and prove the vessel of choice for semi-finished steel products. As they have their own cranes on board, they can also go to less sophisticated ports.

The shipping industry for these types is heavily tuned into timechartering which is reflected in the components of the index. The most regularly traded FFAs are the weighted average of the 6 t/c routes which currently trades mostly for the prompt quarter to three years forward.

Estimated volume of FFAs pa:
200,000 days (550 years)
Average total tonnes carried by each vessel pa: 320kt
Total number of vessels (50/59k dwt): 841
